Industry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_Corporation>Oracle Corp. is a multi-national computer technology corporation specializing in developing marketing and enterprise software products.

History:

Oracle Corporation ranks among the top developers of enterprise software. It all started over 30 years ago when Larry Ellison noticed that several companies were lacking something in regards to database software. He came upon a prototype that worked, but no other company had put any effort in commercializing the technology. Ellison and the rest of his co-founders realized that there was great potential for the relational database model.

In June of 1977, Oracle Corporation was incorporated as Software Development Laboratories (SDL). They then picked up a contact with the CIA who, at that time, needed a unique database program called Oracle. SDL was inspired by an article in the IBM journal about an experimental relation database that worked in an ad hoc network. After the project for the CIA, they then reproduced a commercial version of the database system they made for the CIA. By the end of 1977, SDL offered the first relational database management system (RDBMS) to the public.

SDL changed their name to Relational Software Inc. (RSI) in 1978. Eventually, they developed their database system and named it Oracle, which was released in 1979 for commercial use. RSI witnessed success in the sales of Oracle, and in 1980, their sales grew even more.

Then, in 1980, RSI changed its name yet again and called their company after their RDBMS database: http://www.webhostingreport.com/learn/oracle.html>Oracle Systems Corporation. They released other versions that supported mini-computers and processors.

In 1989, Oracle Corp. saw its sales double during the previous ten years. In the next two decades, the company encountered challenges that shook them as a company. Yet, they overcame them and became the major software company they are today.
